Enlarged Heart, Blunt Force Killed Man in March Crash, ME Says

A cause of death has been determined for Gregg Beason, the 45-year-old Ramona man who died in March after a two-car collision in the San Diego Country Estates.

According to the Medical Examiner, Beason, who passed away in the hospital three days after the March 1 crash, died due to "dilated cardiomyopathy," or a weakened and enlarged heart that was aggravated by blunt force injury of the torso from the accident.

The Medical Examiner said a contributing factor in Beason's death was also his weight.

Beason was driving north on Matlin Road in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado three months ago when he attempted to turn onto Ramona Oaks Road. California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Brian Pennings said Beason failed to yield and entered the path of Robert Ramirez, who was traveling eastbound on Ramona Oaks in his 2004 GMC Sierra.

The two cars collided and both drivers were transported to trauma centers, with Beason being flown to Palomar, Pennings said.

Beason died late afternoon on March 4, the Medical Examiner stated.
