Injured Golden Eagle Returns to the Skies

A golden eagle that was found injured in the Zoo Safari Park recovered in Ramona.

When employees of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park found an injured juvenile golden eagle in October, they turned it over to the Humane Society of the United States to be rehabilitated at their Ramona wildlife center.

On Friday the eagle returned to the Safari Park, spreading his 6.5-feet wings and taking off into the wind for his first flight since he was found in the park’s nature reserve, a 900-acre area set aside for native plants and wildlife.

The Fund for Animals partnered with the Humane Society during the 2-year-old eagle’s treatment. Kim D’Amico, the fund’s animal care specialist, was part of the team that released the bird on Friday, along with intern Tore Smidth and Don Sterner, an animal care manager with the Safari Park.
