Halloween Safety Tips

Avoid candles, keep hemlines above the ground, watch for children when you're driving and inspect all candy.

Ramona Fire Department reminds familes who are trick-or-treating to make sure to take the following safety precautions:

All costumes should be made of flame retardant material.

Hemlines should be short enough to prevent tripping, and avoid loose, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

To be seen easily, costumes should preferably be of a light color.

Use glow-in-the-dark reflective tape on costumes if children will be out in neighborhoods after dark.

Use make up rather than masks, for better vision.

Use battery-powered lights, never candles, to light jack-o'-lanterns.

Instruct children to stay away from open flames.

Remove objects from the yard that might be hazards to children, such as garden hoses, tools, etc.

Be extremely careful with harvest decorations that might include objects such as corn stalks. Keep them away from flames and sources of heat. Don't let them block hallways or stairs.

Do not allow children to carry sharp objects that could injure others.

If you are driving during trick-or-treating, watch out for children and slow down. They may not be watching out for you.

Closely inspect all candy and discard any unwrapped candy from strangers. If in doubt, throw it out.
