Update: Shelter Valley Fire Stopped

A 10-acre fire on both sides of the road closed the highway from San Felipe to Great Southern Overland Stage Route on Monday evening.

Update 6:58 p.m. Monday: The fire has been stopped, Cal Fire tweeted at 6:54 p.m. Crews will stay on scene for several hours.

The California Highway Patrol stated on its website that traffic is being redirected to Highway 79. San Felipe Bridge is being assessed. Clean up could take up to five hours, it was reported at 6:36 p.m.

Cal Fire reported a 10-acre brush fire in the "Narrows" area of Shelter Valley, south of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park on Monday.

The fire had burned on both sides of San Felipe Bridge. No structures were threatened. The cause of the blaze was not known, said Cal Fire spokesman Nick Schuler. The fire was reported at 4:03 p.m.

As of 5 p.m., 13 engines, four hand crews, one bulldozer and two helicopters were working the fire.
