Backflow Devices Are Being Stolen from Ramona Properties

The water district warns residents to watch out for suspicious activity near water meters. Service costs are driving up overtime hours.

As the value of copper and brass has increased, so has the theft of equipment containing the metals.

Ramona Municipal Water District warns that thefts of backflow devices on its meters has been "running rampant" in recent weeks, causing unnecessary overtime hours paid to staff and the loss of sometimes hours of flowing water for consumers. More than a dozen known theft attempts have occurred, the district reports.

Residents are warned to report any suspicious activity near water meters to the Sheriff's Department.

All backflow devices must be immediately replaced, the district stated in a news release distributed Monday.
