Stanley Lloyd Jr. Retrial to Begin in May; Lloyd Stands Accused in Death of Christopher Carioscia

Judge Patricia Cookson will preside over this second trial. The jury deadlocked in the first trial 10-2 in favor of guilt.

A retrial for the man accused in the death of El Capitan High School student Christopher Carioscia on Barona Indian Reservation is due to begin May 15.

Carioscia was 17 when he went missing in October 2010. His bullet-laden body was found in a remote part of the reservation about six weeks later.

Stanley Virgil Lloyd Jr. is charged with first-degree murder with a special allegation of using a firearm. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 50 years to life in prison.

A jury deadlocked 10-2 in favor of guilt in December 2011 and Judge John M. Thompson declared a .

In the first trial, the court heard how Carioscia's parents operated a prescription drug ring, using their son to sell the drugs.

Carioscia was last reported seen alive at Barona Casino. A prosecution witness told the court Carioscia had told him he had to go see "Scooter" that October night. Witnesses testified Scooter was Lloyd Jr.'s nickname.

But the defense argued that there's no evidence that the victim and the accused were in each other's company that night. Attorney Roland Haddad also questioned the veracity of witnesses' recollections.
