Driver Swerves to Avoid Animal, but His Own Dog Dies

The accident occurred near Ramona Oaks Park.

A driver in a pickup truck that overturned in San Diego Country Estates on Saturday was hospitalized with major injuries, according to authorities.

The late-model Chevy pickup overturned on Ramona Oaks Road near Cope Road around 4:30 p.m., said a California Department of Forestry firefighter. The man’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, the firefighter said. The driver’s name was not released.

The truck rolled onto its left side after the driver swerved to avoid hitting an animal that had run onto the road. The man was extricated from the wreckage and taken to Palomar Hospital to be treated for multiple fractures to his arms and hands. The man’s dog was in the truck and died in the crash.
