D Street House Fire Sends Man to Burn Unit With Severe Injuries

A 21-year-old spilled a pot of hot food on himself. The fire, believed to have started in the kitchen, has rendered the house uninhabitable.

A man was airlifted out of Ramona Monday with severe injuries after a house fire on D Street.

The 21-year-old man sustained second- and third-degree burns to 30 percent of his body after spilling a pot of hot food on himself while cooking, according to a City News Service report. He was taken by Mercy Air helicopter to University of California San Diego Burn Unit, according to Ramona Fire Capt. Josh Black.

"He was in severe pain," another Ramona Fire spokesman told Patch.

The Red Cross was called in to help the family find interim lodging because the house has been deemed temporarily uninhabitable.

At this stage, authorities believe the fire began in the kitchen. The San Diego Sheriff's Bomb and Arson Unit will do an investigation, which is usual whenever someone is injured in a house fire.

Family and friends stood outside the home, sobbing and being hugged by others after the fire. It was not immediately known how many people were in the home at the time the blaze started.

The house is in the 400 block of D Street. The fire began at about 2:45 p.m.
