2 Hikers Airlifted Out of Cedar Creek; Dehydration to Blame

The 19-year-old women were hiking with water, but were too weak to hike back to the trailhead, authorities said.

Two female hikers needed assistance out of the Cedar Creek trail Monday afternoon, claiming they were too weak and dehydrated to make it out themselves, Cal Fire Engineer Rocky Voll said.

According to Voll, the 19-year-old hikers called for assistance back to the trailhead just before 3 p.m., both requiring ASTREA to airlift them out. Once out, they were given water and monitored, Voll said, but neither were transported to a hospital.

The women were about a mile down the trail and had one water bottle each, according to Voll. The Cal Fire engineer said temperatures at the top of the trail reached about 97 degrees.

"It tends to be five to 10 degrees warmer down in the trail," Voll said.

A fire engine, ambulance and the San Diego Sheriff's Department responded to the call.
