San Diego Rescue Mission Celebrates Grand Opening of New Thrift Shop in Point Loma Scheduled for May 2, 2014

San Diego Rescue Mission will celebrate the grand opening of its new Thrift Store at 3601 Sports Arena, San Diego 92110 on May 2, 2014 with a San Diego Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting at 12:00 noon, featuring Chamber President and CEO Jerry Sanders.  In addition, San Diego Rescue Mission will hold a grand re-opening on May 2, 2014 of its other thrift stores: City Heights Thrift Store at the Mission Donation Center, 5150 University Avenue, San Diego, 92104; North Park Thrift Store; 3055 University Avenue, San Diego, 92104; and National City Thrift Store, 10 N. Euclid Avenue, National City, CA 91950.

San Diego Rescue Mission signed a 10-year lease for the Point Loma property that had been vacant for two years.

“We have gathered items for the store that are ‘gently used” and donated by caring neighbors,” said Herb Johnson, President and CEO of San Diego Rescue Mission.  “Articles for sale range from furniture and electronics to blue jeans, baby clothes and wedding dresses to sofas, housewares and luggage. The interior of the store has been completely renovated and the exterior, including the parking lot, has been thoroughly upgraded.  It looks so much better and more inviting to shoppers.”

In addition to helping raise money for programs, thrift shop operations in Point Loma also will used as a Training Platform for people in the Rescue Mission’s recovery programs. Clients work in the warehouse and help to merchandise goods within the store and assist customers.

“The work-therapy phase,” said Johnson, “gives our clients skills for when the time comes for them to transition out of the (recovery) program and, with God’s grace, become contributing members of the community.”
