No More Neckties!

What not to get the golfing dad on Father's Day.

Father’s Day and golf…  The two just seem to go hand-in-hand for many Dads.  We even conveniently have the final round of the US Open Golf Championship to finish each year on Father’s Day.  So why then can’t we get some good gifts relating to golf rather than another goofy, ugly, can’t-wear-it-anywhere, golf tie!

With that said I am going to attempt to educate the non-golfers on what, and what not, to purchase for your father, husband, boss, brother, son, friend, relative, nonrelative, life mate, or whomever you may purchase a gift with any connection to the golf world.

Do’s & Don’ts:

Let’s start with the golf ball.  Titleist Pro-V balls are fine…  Any balls with funny sayings or pictures of the Hooter Girls on them are not.

Anything you wear on your wrist to keep score with is a no-no… (Even if it did cost you $1.98… get the point?)

No suction cups you place on the grip of the putter so you don’t need to bend down to pick the ball out of the cup.  With the invention of the golf cart this may be his only real exercise of the day

No hats with what you think are cute sayings like:

“I’m teed off”

“The wood that helps my score the most is a pencil”

“My balls have dimples”

If the hat has the logo of a famous course on it, a top manufacturer of golf equipment, or even plain (God forbid), it is all right.

Equipment:
The water ball retriever is not equipment.  It just fills his bag up with old water
soaked balls that don’t go very far.  As for putters, drivers, irons & wedges, let me ask you this.  Do you want him picking out your dresses, skirts, blouses, & shoes?  Didn’t think so…

Finally, what are some of the best gifts for the golfing Pop on his day?

He gets the entire day to watch the US Open, serving him a few beers.  Afterwards cook him a meal made entirely of a great big steak and potatoes.  No vegies, wine, or napkins… (maybe more beer)

And to end the day present him with a DVD of Caddy Shack, sit down, and watch the greatest golf movie of all time, together.

(Changes may be made to the above suggestion as it really is my perfect Father’s Day!)

As a PGA Member and local teaching professional please feel free to “ask the Pro” anything you want about the gift you intend to get the golfing dad.  If it’s about slippers with headlights, or more ugly ties, you are on your own…
