Behind the Biz: Crazy 9 Patch

The energetic store helps Ramona Patch launch its first "Behind the Biz" column.

This ain't your mother's quilt shop. If you're expecting the usual dim-lit, low-energy quilting shop, look elsewhere; because Crazy 9 Patch is anything but your average one-stop shop.

Crazy 9 Patch opened its doors 8 years ago by Ramona resident Martha Berntsen. It offers up all your quilting needs and then some. Almost every day, the deceivingly-large shop has a workshop or class for the beginner quilter and experienced.

Bernsten, who has lived in town since '82, took some time out of her day to talk to Ramona Patch for the inaugural "Behind the Biz" column. See what she had to say about the "lady's version of a bar."

Patch: Why did you decide to start this business in Ramona?

Berntsen: I live here and there was a need for a quilt shop. The quilters here had to go down the hill.

Patch: What's behind the name "The Crazy 9 Patch?"

Berntsen: It's a quilt pattern! When I was deciding to make a quilt shop, my husband and I were visiting different quilt shops and we saw a quilt in the crazy 9 patch pattern. We both loved it.

Patch: What distinguishes your business from others in the same industry?

Berntsen: The lighting! It's important to see the colors and fabrics. Most stores are so dark. And our lively and energetic employees that have a passion for creativity and customer service.

Patch: Any current challenges you face as a business owner?

Berntsen: Encouraging a new generation of quilters.

Patch: What's the best business advice you've ever been given?

Berntsen: Focus on the customer's wants and needs. It's all about connecting with the customer.
