A vehicle struck the pole of a signal light on Main Street at Montecito Road Tuesday just after 3 p.m. after running a red light, California Highway Patrol said.

According to CHP Officer Brian Kattke, an 86-year-old man driving a Ford Taurus was pulling out of the Ramona Post Office and heading north on Montecito Road.

Kattke said witnesses saw the driver "accelerate at a high rate of speed" and run a red light, narrowly missed two trucks, one driving eastbound on Main Street, the other westbound on Main. The trucks were going through the intersection on a green light.

"The Taurus veered to the right and crashed into the pole," Kattke said

The CHP officer said it appeared the driver wasn't wearing his seatbelt and suffered a deep laceration to his hand and abrasions to his head.

Sheriff's Deputy Eric Garcia, who was first on scene, said he found the driver of the Taurus in the passenger's seat.

According to authorities, the driver was transported to Palomar Hospital via ambulance.

No other cars were involved in the accident.
