Sweet Scholarships: Pie Auction Raises Nearly $24K for 4H Members

Local 4H members gained scholarship funds at the annual fundraiser on July 13.

It was a night of sweet treats and community generosity Saturday night at the Ramona Fairgrounds during the annual Pie Auction.

The evening, filled with baked goods and barbecue, was a chance for local 4H members to raise money for their organization, as well as scholarships funds.

Crissy Tobiason, who organizes the Pie Auction, said nearly $24,000 was raised at the July 13 event — about $7,000 more than last year.

"People were awesome," Tobiason said. "Everyone is a participant, whether they bid or just buy a ticket for dinner."

According to the organizer, the highest auctioned item was a basket of baked goods (brownies, cookies, etc.) that went for $825, made by the Gwen family. Here's a breakdown of the funds raised:

  • Pie Auction: $21,560
  • Pie In The Face: $625
  • Dinner Proceeds: $1,144
  • Miscellaneous Donations: $102.50
  • Total Earnings: $23,432
  • Scholarship fund earned: $3,815
Tobiason said three bidders spend more than $1,000 at the auction: Hankin's Construction, Kritter Kamp and Specialty Meats.

Born-and-bred Ramonan Levi Gassaway led the auction (on his first anniversary of his wedding day!) and 4H members served the food and assisted in the auction.

Scholarships will be awarded to the 4H members at the Ramona Junior Fair, which runs from July 27-Aug. 4.
