[Updated] Man Killed in One-Car Crash on SR 78 Identified

The San Diego Medical Examiner has identified the man who was killed in a one-car crash on state Route 78 Monday as Mitchell Durbin from Julian. 

Authorities said the 88-year-old was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck eastbound on highway 78, just east of highway 79, around 4:08 p.m. on June 17 when the vehicle drifted off the south shoulder.

According to CHP, the truck went down an embankment and collided with a tree. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities reported.

CHP said it is still unknown why the vehicle drifted off the road and at what speed the truck was traveling.

The driver was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision, CHP said, and no alcohol or drugs are suspected.  

CHP is currently investigating the crash.
