“Have a Nice Day Job” provides a humorous look back at Dave’s thirty-two year career with California State Parks. As a park ranger, park ecologist, and park superintendent, the author had several wonderful assignments throughout the State.

In this book, the author relates a series of true stories about his experiences, which range from weird arrests like putting a bad guy in jail for littering in a state park and contacting illegal campers at 11,000' in his underwear to unique situations such as backpacking in a tuxedo on duty one evening out of necessity, or making a date with a nudist on Black’s Beach.

Mixed metaphors and malapropisms keep the stories light and amusing. Throughout the book the author also conveys the deep respect and gratitude he felt (and still feels) for the members of the "Parks Family" with whom he served for over three decades.

About the Author:

David H. Van Cleve spent thirty-two years with California State Parks. He was a park ranger, a park ecologist, and finally, a park superintendent. He was educated at the University of California, Santa Cruz with a BA in Geography and Environmental Studies and at UC Santa Barbara with an MA in Geography. He credits the original Earth Day, in the spring of 1970, with giving him a permanent nudge towards a career in conservation. He lists the most important achievement of his life as creating the "Banana Slugs" as the mascot for the sports teams at UC Santa Cruz in 1970, which has since become regarded as one of the most iconic college mascots in the nation.
