'Homerun for Chelsea' Comes to Well Field Park Sunday

1,300 players will compete at 10 ballfields around San Diego county, to benefit Chelsea's Light Foundation.

The father of slain Poway teen Chelsea King is expected to throw the first pitch at a charity baseball tournament at Ramona's Well Field Park on Sunday.

Brent King will do the honors at the 2nd annual Homerun for Chelsea which honors his daughter's life and benefits Chelsea's Light Foundation. The Poway teen was murdered while jogging in a Rancho Bernardo park in 2010. The foundation in her name raises money for scholarships and peer counseling. About $130,000 has been given out in scholarships in the past two years, King told Patch on Tuesday.

Approximately 1,300 kids in teams from San Diego, Los Angeles and Riverside counties will gather to play in the tournament at 10 locations throughout San Diego county on Sunday. Players will be ages 5 through 14. Locally, the tournament is sponsored by Ramona Pony Baseball.

King is expected to throw the first pitch at about 8:30 a.m. The games will continue until 6 p.m.

The King family now lives in western Chicago. When Chelsea's life was taken in 2010, her brother, Tyler, was 13 years old. When Patch asked King if Tyler would be joining his parents for the tournament in San Diego, he said his son is staying home to play in his own team. Tyler will be 16 in June and is enjoying high school, his dad said. He is a writer on the school newspaper.
