Man Who Died on Scout Hike Identified as Poway Resident

Charles Dumars, 46, was on a father-son hike with Troop 680 of Rancho Bernardo.

The man who died while hiking with Boy Scouts in the Black Mountain Truck Trail area of Ramona on Saturday has been identified as Charles Fostor Dumars of Poway by the county medical examiner's office. He was 46 years old.

Dumars collapsed during a father-son hike, according to the news release. The cause of death was listed as atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. Sheriff's deputies and medics were called in, and Dumars was given advanced cardio life-support measures. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene on Pamo Road, the news release states.

Intermountain Fire & Rescue reported Saturday that fire vehicles were unable to reach the remote hiking location near Black Mountain Truck Trail, but two helicopters from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department were able to land near the group to deliver rescue teams.

Dumars was put on a gurney and loaded into one of the helicopters and flown a short distance to a landing zone that was established at the intersection of Pamo Road and Black Mountain Truck Trail, according to Adam Pollock, a spokesman for Intermountain. Medics from Mercy Air were waiting at the landing zone and took over patient care. A total of three helicopters participated in the rescue, Pollock said.

Pollock said the group was on a practice hike preparing for a three-day trip in May, and the Boy Scouts ranged in age from 14-17.
