Chamber Group Endorses Plans to Extend Country Fair

Plans are moving ahead to extend Ramona Country Fair. Hal Gansert, representing Committee for a Better Ramona, has approached the Chamber of Commerce seeking its approval.

Hal Gansert is pleased with the reception he received from the Economic Development Committee for his proposal to extend the Country Fair. Carol Fowler, chair of the Ramona Chamber of Commerce’s committee, said her group was responsive to the idea but it needs more work before being finalized.

“We’re endorsing the concept but we think they need to come back with a more comprehensive plan,” Fowler said.

Gansert’s idea to add more events leading up to the August fair is backed by the Committee for a Better Ramona. Its president, Bob Krysak, has assured Gansert there is an extensive list of volunteers ready to step forward to help with the pre-fair activities. That way, it will not require extra hours from the chamber’s goodwill ambassador team.

Gansert’s suggestion is to get more involvement from local restaurants and other businesses interested in hosting entertainment venues, such as the theater. Gansert said he will begin contacting the restaurants to request small signs be placed on tables advertising the events. He also will be working with Charlie Teachert, who has been heading a project for the chamber called “Taste of Ramona.”

Gansert reported his progress at the Feb. 23 general meeting of the Committee for a Better Ramona. In other business, the group discussed a giveaway program that will culminate at the community’s Fourth of July festivities.

A two-week stay at Good Life Timeshare will be given away in a free drawing on July 4. The prize includes a golfing weekend with dinner for two at the same location.

Entry boxes will be placed in various locations around town. Interested persons can fill out an entry form, along with an email address, at participating merchants. They also can sign up online at www.betterramona.net.

Committee for a Better Ramona members also will begin canvassing local neighborhoods in an effort to increase its electronic membership. Krysak said in addition he will be setting up tables outside supermarkets to reach the residents.

In other business, there was discussion on polling local residents in an effort to repeal Proposition NN. The proposition was approved in 1988 to restrict Ramona Municipal Water District Board of Directors from approving capital improvement projects, equipment acquisitions or any other debts in excess of $2 million. In order to do so, it would need to be placed on the ballot for voter approval.

“We’re here for Ramona residents to get the feedback and help them make Ramona decisions,” Krysak said of the Prop. NN survey that will be on the website. He added there will be a notification to the public when the survey is posted.
