Riders Compete in Barrel Racing for Spot in Ramona Rodeo

The WPRA-sanctioned event is a forerunner for the local rodeo, with riders and horses trying for the fastest times around a cloverleaf pattern.

Barrel racing, a popular rodeo event geared toward female riders, brought out 67 girls and women Saturday to the Fred Grand Arena to compete for a spot in this week’s Ramona Rodeo.

Riders were competing for jackpot prizes, while vying for the fastest times to maneuver their horses around three barrels.

Winners selected for the best times were: Maryellen Hannon, $373; Lisa Guasti, $335; Lisa Marie Miller, $285; and Jeannie Malone, $248.

It is now one of the largest rodeo sanctioning bodies in the world and has more than 3,000 members throughout the United States and Canada. It is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Ramona Rodeo will be in the Ramona Outdoor Community Center, 421 Aqua Lane. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. For more information, click here.
