September is Time to Think of Fall Growing Season

Check out this vegetable planting guide and maybe visit the San Diego Home/Garden Show this weekend.

This month, gardeners think ahead to what they can harvest over the winter. It's time to start thinking about soil preparation for cool season crops, which are mostly root and leaf vegetables.

To see a list of "hardy" vegetables that will survive a frost or lower temperatures, see the Vegetable Planting Guide offered by the University of California San Diego Cooperative Extension, attached to this article. The hardy group includes asparagus, brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, onions, radishes, rhubarb, spinach and turnips. The "half-hardy" group includes beets, broccoli, carrots, celery, chard, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, parsnips, early potatoes, garden peas and parsley.

The attached list also contains generally recommended soil preparation methods, fertilizer tips and planting dates.
