A threatened strike has been averted in Ramona schools, a parents group signaled Thursday and union confirmed Friday, avoiding the prospect of the first teacher walkout in San Diego County since 1996.

A settlement between the Ramona Unified School District and Ramona Teachers Association (RTA) has been reached, the Ramona Parents Coalition announced.

The teachers union website said Friday: "Check your personal email for more details about the tentative agreement. General Membership Meeting will be Tuesday."

According to the parent-formed group, the two parties  signed a two-year agreement around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday that ends in June 2014. The RTA and District met with Public Employment Relations Board Wednesday morning in Glendale, the coalition said.

"It still must be ratified and signed by both sides on June 6," they stated.

RTA President Donna Braye-Romero confirmed that a "tentative" agreement has been reached.

"Teachers will ratify it on Tuesday of next week. Board approval is Thursday. Teachers will have details by tomorrow," she said.

A two-day vote of RTA members in early May authorized union leaders to call a strike  “when and if it becomes necessary.”

It could have led to the first teachers strike in San Diego County since a five-day walkout in San Diego Unified in 1996.

On May 22, the Ramona Parents Coalition gave a public presentation at the Ramona Library on the fact-finding report released earlier this year.
