Country Fair Coming

Ramona Country Fair is coming up with a down-sized version of what was offered at the San Diego County Fair but there'll be no crafts or hobby contests this year.

Record attendance for this year’s San Diego County Fair in Del Mar was more than 1.4 million people during the 22-day event.

Three Ramona High School students did well in the Student Showcase division. Amanda Callihan won Best of Class and Best of Show for a drafting project. Amanda Swafford and Timothy Wilder also received Best of Class for their drafting projects. Meagan Sulzen earned Best of Class and Best of Show for a prototype project.

Ramona Patch is still waiting to hear more about the winners in the livestock divisions. If anyone has photos of some of the animals that made the trek to Del Mar, let us know or post them in the comments section.

The annual Country Fair sponsored by Ramona Chamber of Commerce will be July 28 - 31. There will be opening ceremonies each day, at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and noon on Saturday and Sunday.

Contestants from the Ramona Idol contest will perform each evening with the finalists competing on July 30. Auditions are still open for the contest. There are four age categories, three for children and one for adults.

Now in its 41st year, the Country Fair has undergone some changes this year. There will not be any craft displays or contests. There will be special games and contests for children, including a frozen T-shirt contest that should offer some excitement on a hot day.

Vendors will have an array of foods and home improvement products, as well as the familiar candles, jewelry and an assortment of clothing and accessories for sale.

“It’s just a down-sized version of what you might find at Del Mar,” chamber executive director Craig Jung said.

Carnival rides will be provided by Christiansen Amusements, of Ramona and Escondido.

The fair takes place at Ramona Outdoor Community Center, 421 Aqua Lane. There is no admission charged for the fair. For more information, call the chamber office at (760) 789-1311.
