Up to 8 Inches of Snow at Mt. Laguna; Winter Storm Warning in Effect

The National Weather Service advises snow could accumulate in the highest elevations on Interstate 8 and Highway 78. Flooding is possible from runoff in all urban areas.

Rain, hail and blustery winds made driving treacherous throughout San Diego county on Friday. A flood advisory was issued due to runoff. California Highway Patrol reported 44 collisions on roads in the unincorporated areas from 1 to 5 p.m. Normally, there are 50 to 75 crashes on a "good weather day," according to the CHP.

Rain was expected to continue through the night, with snow possible as low as 3,500 feet by Saturday morning. Mt. Laguna Fire Department, at 6,000 feet, reported 4 to 8 inches of snow at 7:45 p.m. Friday.

Motorists traveling at high elevations should carry chains, a flashlight and extra food and clothing, the National Weather Service warned Friday. A winter storm warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. Saturday. Travel was not advised in the mountains Friday night unless it was an emergency. Snow was expected to accumulate at high elevations on Interstate 8 and along Highway 78.

Caltrans reported a high wind warning on Interstate 8 from Alpine to the Imperial County line on Friday. Travel was not recommended for high profile vehicles, such as campers, trailers, or permit loads.
