Unemployment Rate Dips in Ramona

The Employment Development Department releases September's unemployment rates, which are lower locally, countywide and across California.

The unemployment rate in Ramona dropped in August and September, according to data released by the state Employment Development Department.

In September, the unemployment rate was 9 percent, down from 9.4 percent in August and 9.8 percent in July.

The unemployment numbers for the state and county improved as well in September. The rate in San Diego County was 9.7 percent, down from a 10.2 percent in August, and statewide the rate was 11.4 percent, down from 12.1. The data were not adjusted for seasonal hiring fluctuations.

The national, unadjusted unemployment rate stayed steady in September, unchanged at 8.8 percent.

The hospitality industry in the county shed 6,500 jobs in September, with arts, entertainment and recreation losing 3,400 jobs and accommodation and food-related jobs declining by 3,100, according to the EDD. The construction industry also lost jobs, with 1,400 lost in September, 70 percent of them specialty trade contractors.

Agricultural employment in the county rose by 300 jobs. Government jobs increased by 4,300 countywide over the month, with local governments adding 3,000, the state adding 1,200 and the federal government adding 100. Statewide, however, the number of government jobs decreased by 7,000, the largest of the six categories that shed jobs in September.

In September 2010, the unemployment rate in Ramona was 9.7 percent; the county’s was 10.5 percent; the state’s was 12.1 percent; and the nation’s was 9.2 percent.
