Retrial With New Judge and Jury for Stanley Lloyd Jr. in Death of Carioscia

A new judge will be assigned Jan. 18 due to rotating of court staff in the New Year.

Stanley Lloyd Jr., accused of first-degree murder in the death of Christopher Carioscia of Santee, will face a retrial, with a new judge and jury next year.

Lloyd is accused of gunning down Carioscia, an El Capitan High School student, on Barona Indian Reservation late last year. ; Lloyd was 19 when arrested at his Lakeside home in March 2011.

A 10-2 in favor of a guilty verdict and Judge John M. Thompson ruled a mistrial. The District Attorney's Office has decided to proceed with a second trial. The district attorney could have dropped the case and/or the judge could have dismissed it.

Judge Thompson cannot preside over the case again because he will be the criminal calendar presiding judge for the El Cajon branch of Superior Court in the New Year, prosecutor David Williams III told Patch on Thursday.

"On Jan. 18 he will assign it to a new judge and we don't know which department that will be in," Williams said.

Defense attorney Roland Haddad of La Mesa told Patch that he will continue to represent Lloyd in the second trial.

Earlier this year, Williams said there was to see whether others may have been involved in Carioscia's death.

There is no statute of limitations for murder.

However, Williams was not able to discuss whether that investigation is continuing or any aspects of the retrial.

Lloyd faces 50 years to life in prison if convicted. There is a special allegation of felony murder, involving the use of a firearm. is believed to have been a .357 revolver.
