Ranchita Area Brush Fire Controlled at 15 Acres

A blaze erupted near a campground in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park on Thursday morning.

A brush fire of unknown origin blackened about 15 open acres Thursday in the remote eastern reaches of San Diego County, but never threatened any structures.

The non-injury blaze began spreading about 10:30 a.m. in steep, rugged terrain roughly a mile from a campground on Montezuma Valley Road in Anza- Borrego Desert State Park, according to Cal Fire. Crews fought the slow-moving flames with five air tankers, four helicopters, 15 engines, four water trucks and a bulldozer, said Mike Mohler, a fire captain with the state agency. It took the personnel about 90 minutes to gain control of the blaze, Mohler said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
