Ramona Library Will Open for Business Tuesday

A celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. with festivities continuing until 8 p.m. in the state-of-the-art facility.

The new branch library is due to officially opens its doors at 11 a.m. Tuesday and everyone in town is invited to the celebration. The event will be hosted by San Diego County Library and its director Jose Aponte.

“This new facility is the ‘Library of the Future,’” Aponte stated in a press release. “Every single member of the Ramona community is invited to find their own personal sanctuary within these walls.”

County Supervisor Dianne Jacob will attend, along with members of Friends of Ramona Library, who will provide refreshments.

The new library, at 1275 Main St., is about three times the size of the existing branch in the county complex at Main Street and Montecito Road. There is a community room for organizations to use for meetings, a room for Friends of the Library to have ongoing book sales, a computer center and separate spaces for children and teenagers.

State-of-the-art features include an automated book sorter, solar panels and digital signage displaying solar energy levels.

Construction on the 19,400-square-foot building began in the fall of 2009. The County Board of Supervisors approved $11.6 million for the project, with private groups raising more than $1 million.

Following Tuesday's ceremony, the library will be open for business until 8 p.m. The music ensemble Silverwood will perform at 12:15 p.m. There will be storytime for youngsters at 3 p.m. along with face painting, video games for teenagers and library tours.

Ramona High School Jazz Band will perform at 4 p.m., crafts and games will continue until 5 p.m. Mariachi Diamante is due to perform at 5:30 p.m.. Light Mexican refreshments will be served.
