New Trail Opens Saturday in Poway, as a Branch off Coast to Crest Trail

The trail is the county's first north-south connector to branch off the Coast to Crest trail, which leads from Del Mar to the San Dieguito River's source on Volcan Mountain.

Deputy Poway Mayor Jim Cunningham has completed 11 marathons over the past 20 years. He’s also become hypothermic while hiking in Calgary. But he doubts anything that dramatic will happen this weekend when he celebrates the opening of a new trail in Poway.

“I don’t expect this walk is going to finish me off,” he said of the 10-mile private hike he’ll lead from the Trans-County trail to the Old Coach North staging area for the public ceremony. “But you never know.”

This trail is San Diego County’s first north-south connector to branch off from the 55-mile Coast to Crest trail, which leads from the ocean at Del Mar to the San Dieguito River’s source on Volcan Mountain.

“We’re the first ones to actually officially walk this trail and I’m sure that’s something I’ll never forget,” Cunningham said.

And while he’s honored to have the lead role on Saturday, Cunningham said the real credit goes to the city and river park staff for making the project happen.
