Julian Sanitation District Will Merge into a New Countywide District

Julian is among at least eight sanitation and sewer districts that will become part of the new San Diego County Sanitation District.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Wednesday took another step toward streamlining services around the county. The board voted unanimously to consolidate several sanitation and sewer maintenance districts into a single new entity, the San Diego County Sanitation District.

The Julian, Alpine, Lakeside and Pine Valley sanitation districts and Campo Water and Sewer, Winter Gardens, Harmony Grove and East Otay Mesa sewer maintenance districts will all become part of the new district.

Supervisors first voted to annex the districts into the Spring Valley Sanitation District and then they renamed it San Diego County Sanitation District.

Both actions take effect July 1.

The merge into the new district will set an annual rate of $336 per home in all service areas, according to the board. This will be less than what residents now pay in Julian, Alpine, Campo, Lakeside and Pine Valley.

Rates will increase by about 8 percent annually for residents in East Otay Mesa. Residents in Winter Gardens will see their annual rates increase by 55 percent, but will be able to keep their current annual rate of $216 for three years.

Supervisor Dianne Jacob called the vote "excellent news for unincorporated residents.''

"This is another great effort by this county to consolidate and bring together resources to conserve efficiency,'' Jacob said.
