Part of Highway 78 to Escondido To Be Temporarily Closed 9 am to 3pm Week Days Starting Thursday

CalTrans is doing slope stabilization. The closure during off-peak hours is expected to last three weeks.

Beginning Thursday, a portion of Highway 78 between Escondido and Ramona is due to be temporarily closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for some slope stabilization.

"Our contractor has requested this closure for approximately three weeks because they have to bring in heavy equipment that will take up both lanes," said CalTrans spokesman Hayden Manning.

"But of course the length of the time will depend on the weather," he said.

The highway will be closed from Indian Oaks Road to Weekend Villa Road during the stated hours.

Work has been under way on the highway for a few weeks to stabilize some rocks on a slope, Manning said.

CalTrans suggests that motorists traveling to Escondido take Highway 67, then Scripps Poway Parkway and then Interstate 15.

Eastbound drivers should follow that same route in reverse.

The work is designed to keep rocks from falling onto the highway, CalTrans reports.

A map showing the area closed, plus the suggested detour routes, is posted with this article.
