Fire Prevention—Free Chipping Service Available

Residents can get help chipping vegetation that has already been cleared.

Protecting property from wildfire requires a properly maintained landscape. In many areas, that includes thinning vegetation, but it's hard for many property owners to dispose of the trimmed materials.

A free chipping service is available in 31 backcountry communities, including Ramona, Julian and Santa Ysabel. To sign up, contact Tina Burnett, fuels reduction coordinator at the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County, 619-562-0096 or email Tina.burnett@rcdsandiego.org.

The No-Cost Chipping Service crews from the Urban Corps of San Diego County will bring a chipper to the residence and will chip vegetation that has been cut and piled up to 6-feet high on the property.

Chipped material will be left on-site, not hauled away. Crews are unable to chip brush or limbs that have been mechanically removed from the ground by tractors or other heavy machinery. Material should be free from mud, rocks, construction wood and other debris and should be placed near a road where crews can access it.
