Eighty-Five Percent Voter Turnout Expected in Sonoma County

Registrar of Voters makes predictions by looking 'at the level of excitement' and the return of mail-in ballots. Also by putting 'a finger in the wind.'

Sonoma County's Registrar of Voters, Janice Atkinson, is predicting 85 percent of the county's registered voters will cast votes in the presidential general election.

In the 2008 presidential election, Sonoma County had the highest voter turnout in the state, with 93.4 percent of those registered casting their votes, Atkinson told Patch. The 2004 presidential election drew 89 percent of the county's registered voters, she said.

She said she makes her predictions based on "the level of excitement out there" and the number of mail ballots coming in.

"I put a finger in the wind," she said, with a chuckle.

"We pride ourselves on getting the mail ballots out and getting them back in time. Our voters like to vote this way," she said. "Its popular throughout the state."

Atkinson said the County also prides itself on the level of interest that residents take in voting.

"We've got a bit of a competition with Marin," she said. "It's great that people get so involved and want to vote."

She had no comment on why Sonoma County demographics might lead to high voter turnouts.

"We don't really care about that or make comments," she said. "We just hope for high margins."

If you haven't had a chance to mail in your ballot, you can drop it off at any polling booth in the county tomorrow, she said.

Yeah I think people should vote for Obama and not be seeking revenge for his intelligence.

Hi Julie! Thanks for the article. It's always good news to hear that voter turnout is going to be strong. But, I think I'm confused. Do you truly mean 85% of county citizens or 85% of registered voters? Surely those are different numbers?

Yes, right you are. I used that wording in one part of the article. Thanks for drawing my attention to it Ann. Thanks for reading Patch.

The father of Ty Woods wants the truth: "Mr. President ... It’s better to die the death of a hero than it is to live the life of a coward.” Said Mr. Charles Woods, the father of murdered Benghazi SEAL Tyrone Woods, directly to Barack Obama. (source: below, Fox with Geraldo Rivera). We stand with Mr. Woods. We WANT THE TRUTH NOW! We will not be silent until after the election! Who refused to help our SEALS and Ambassador? Former National Security Adviser Bud McFarlane added this on Obama’s non-response to the Benghazi attack: “To have known what he had available, to have known that Americans were under fire, and to have done nothing, is dereliction of duty that I have never seen in a Commander in Chief from a president of any party. Outrageous.” Chairman Buck McKeon of the House Armed Services Committee: “I don’t think Obama issued an order to help the Americans in Benghazi… The president's leadership has been woefully lacking. Looks to me like a cover-up, they just want to keep everything under wraps until after the election. But that just doesn't cut it. We need to find out what happened. Why we left those people without protection, and why we did nothing to help them."
