14-month-old Rhilee Collier Laid to Rest Thursday

About 150 people attended a quiet service at Home of Peace Cemetery. Rhilee was allegedly fatally shot by her father, Kevin Collier, on Aug. 21.

Rhilee Jean Collier, daughter of Kevin and Alyssa Collier, was laid to rest Thursday in a 2 p.m. service at Home of Peace Cemetery in San Diego.

In a Jewish service, a rabbi and teacher noted that even though parents would like to protect their innocent children from the dangers of life, adults' ability to do so has limits.

Rhilee was born June 22, 2010. She died of a gunshot wound to the head on Aug. 21, 2011, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. Her father, Kevin Collier, a former Ramona resident, was the suspect in her death when his own body was found in the burned out home of his mother-in-law in El Cajon. The body of his mother-in-law, Beverli Rakov, was also found in the home. Alyssa and Kevin had been living with her.

Authorities reported that Kevin had been the suspect in Rakov's death and the burning down of her home and that he had taken his own life. Rhilee's body was found in the back seat of a pickup truck used by Kevin and parked outside the home, according to authorities. It was reported that Alyssa Collier had filed for divorce four days prior to the incident.

On Thursday, Rhilee's tiny casket was lowered into the ground beside bouquets of pink rosebuds and carnations, sunflowers and yellow chrysanthemums on a bank at the cemetery.

After the service, those in attendance formed two lines for Rhilee's family to walk between back to their vehicles as a show of support—a traditional end to the service.

Before leaving, people plucked pink carnations from the bouquets and, one by one, walked forward to lay them quietly on top of the grave.
