Watch Out for Our Feathered Friends Crossing the Roads

It must be that time of year for hatchlings. The pond on Ramona Street, initially called Turtle Pond, is evidence with all the baby ducks in a line behind their parents. Drivers are extra alert and slowing down when they approach the pond. The ducks are not known for looking both ways before crossing the street.

Continuing on along Ramona Street may bring out another sighting of chicks. A small flock of wild turkeys has a dad, a couple of moms and two babies. They think the road belongs to them but will scoot out of the way when they hear a car coming.

Doug Lake and the volunteers with Emergency Animal Rescue will be at San Diego County Fair in Del Mar on Saturday. They will be setting up a booth to take part in the Burn Institute’s 21st annual Farmers Insurance Fire Expo.

While E.A.R. specializes in animal rescues, firefighters from around the county will be demonstrating other life-saving skills, such as rappelling from the arena rafters and extinguishing a car fire. There also will be a demolition derby at 5 p.m.

More than 100 fire trucks will parade through the fairgrounds at 1 p.m. Old-time fire trucks will be on display throughout the day in the Chevrolet Del Mar Arena. For more information, check online at www.sdfair.com/events.

Is there a hero in your life? San Diego County Fair is looking for special folks to honor on July 4. They will choose 125 “Hometown Heroes” from all the entries. “Heroes” are described as “those who make our quality of life better and safer every day.” It’s a special way of saying “Thank you” for all they have done.

Nominations can be made at the KxKy radio website. The deadline is June 19. Go to http://kyxy.radio.com and enter the keyword “hero.” Let’s get some special folks from Ramona on the nomination list.

And remember Ramona Day at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar is July 2. Local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce will have information tables in the infield pavilion and will hand out information about Ramona.
