Small Fires Break Out on Route 78

The fires prompted a shut down of the highway.

Several small fires broke out Saturday off state Route 78 east of Ramona, which prompted officials to temporarily shut down part of the highway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fires were reported just before 10:20 a.m. on a hillside near Sutherland Dam Road, according to CHP reports.

About an acre was scorched before the fire was put out, according to Cal Fire.

Westbound Route 78 was shut down at Old Julian Highway and traffic headed toward Ramona was diverted onto westbound Old Julian Highway, the CHP reported.

All lanes were reopened about 11:45 a.m., the CHP said.
