Prepare For Emergencies During National Preparedness Month

Cal Fire and Ramona Fire would like to remind the community that the month of September is a time to get prepared.

The month of September is dedicated to informing the public about how to be prepared in case of emergencies. Here in Ramona, residents should be prepared for all types of emergencies, but most especially wildfires.

Celebrate National Preparedness Month by being informed, making a plan and building a kit.

The provides some in-depth information on how to protect your family and home from wildfires with their comprehensive guide that you can print out.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides plenty of information and resources on their website, including a list of suggested items to have in an emergency supply kit. Some items include:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First Aid kit
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils
  • Cash or traveler's checks, change
  • Paper towels
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Tent
  • and more

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) also has a list of steps to help families prepare for emergencies. Taking these steps could help you and your family in the event of an emergency:

  1. Make an emergency plan and practice it with family members.
  2. Build an emergency supply kit, including three days' worth of food, water and essentials.
  3. Learn what to do before, during and after an emergency, and what communication channels could help you stay informed during different types of disasters.
