Ramona Lawyer, 70, Among 5 Killed in Texas Crash

Fred Ulysses Hammett Jr. of Ramona was killed late Wednesday night near Mesquite, TX.

Fred Ulysses Hammett Jr. of Ramona was killed late Wednesday night in Mesquite, TX, when his GMC Acadia was hit by a Ford pickup driven on the wrong side of the road, according to Texas media reports.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash, which shut down I-20 for hours, said the Mineola Monitor.

It’s still unclear why Krystle Dawn Murphy Carranza, 27, was driving the wrong way, the Monitor reported. Carranza and her three daughters perished.

"Police said she almost hit a state trooper minutes before crashing into Hammett’s vehicle," the paper said, adding that records obtained from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department indicate Carranza had been arrested three times since 2005, once for driving while intoxicated on April 27, 2006.

Hammett, 70, is listed as an active attorney with a San Diego work address.

East County Magazine reported that Hammett was in Texas to attend his sister’s memorial service and was driving a rental SUV.

If they were to enforce good driving, and good parenting, this woman would not have been on the road. This is heartbreaking for him and his family, and also for those kids.

I heard about this accident on Friday from a friend who lives in McKinney, Tx. She said a guy from Ramona was killed by a wrong way driver. I went looking for the story. So glad it was finally reported here. To the Hammett family so sorry about your lost. What are the chances she was drunk?

Fred was a sweet and kind-hearted man that I am proud I was able to know as my father-in-law. He was able to see his new grandson Nolan just a few months ago....it was a wonderful visit. He will be so missed.

Has the toxicology report been released yet? I was passed by her, and honestly, she wasn't swerving when she passed, but there were plenty of opportunities for her to turn around or pull over. So I think she was def under the influence of something. Hammett family, I'm so sorry for your loss.
