Police Find, Arrest Ramona Church Burglars

Two men who allegedly burglarized a North County church last week were arrested today during a freeway traffic stop.

Deputies took Christopher Szumski, 34, and Brandon Tye, 19, into custody this morning alongside Interstate 8, near Main Street in El Cajon, sheriff's Lt. Hank Turner said.

During interviews with detectives, Szumski and Tye allegedly admitted forcing entry to St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Ramona and ransacking it on April 14. Among the losses were safes, cash, checks and sacramental wine, Turner said.

The suspects also allegedly confessed to committing a residential burglary in San Marcos.

Stolen property was found during a search of the vehicle the pair were in at the time of the traffic stop, according to Turner.

Szumski and Tye were booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of burglary and possession of stolen property.
