Victim of Highway Fatality in Morettis Junction Was Escondido Man

Justin Michael Cook died in head-on collision between a big rig and his small car, CHP says.

A 20-year-old man killed Friday in a head-on collision with a big rig in northeastern San Diego County was identified Saturday as Justin Michael Cook of Escondido.

Cook, who had been eastbound on state Route 76, turned north from a stop sign onto state Route 79 and into the path of a southbound tractor-trailer about 1:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

He lived with his parents, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

An autopsy is pending.

One person died Friday in a head-on collision between a car and a big rig on a rural highway in northeastern San Diego County. The collision occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. on state Route 79, near SR-76 and Lake Henshaw in Morettis Junction, according to the California Highway Patrol.

An occupant of the smaller vehicle died at the scene, the CHP reported.

Traffic was being detoured around the accident scene to the south, through the Mesa Grande area.
