‘Inquisitive, Smart’ Camel Killed After Trailer Overturns; Called Pregnant

The owners of the Oasis Camel Dairy were delivering a 5-year-old camel back to her home in Arizona when the trailer's safety chains broke.

Updated at 3:35 p.m. on Feb. 1

A camel that had reportedly been training at the Oasis Camel Dairy for 14 months was killed Friday morning after the trailer it was being towed in uncoupled from the towing vehicle and veered into a hill, overturning, said Oasis Camel Dairy owner Nancy Riegler.

Riegler said she and her husband were bringing the 5-year-old dromedary (one humped) camel back to her home in Camp Verde, AZ when the 16-foot stock trailer, which is owned by the camel's owner, uncoupled from the Reigler's truck at Highway 78 and 3rd Street—just 6 miles into their journey.

"Fortunately, we were traveling very slowly," Riegler said in the comments of a Patch article. "But unfortunately, not only did the trailer’s hitch fail, but the trailer’s safety chains broke."

California Highway Patrol reported Friday morning around 8:10 a.m. of the overturned horse trailer containing a camel. Westbound lanes were blocked on Highway 78 and animal control was called in.

The camel, Riegler said, died.

"The trailer was traveling at such a slow speed, we fully expected to see the camel with just scrapes and bruises," Reigler said in a comment on Patch. "We have sent the camel’s body to San Bernardino Animal Health Services County Veterinarian for a necropsy."

Someone by the username Virginia Thespiritwhisperer left a comment on Patch hinting that Sahara, the camel, was pregnant.

"Neither she nor the baby survived," Virginia said in the comments. "I am devastated and heartbroken beyond words. This accident should NOT have happened!"

Riegler said that Sahara was introduced to a bull camel while at Oasis Camel, but a veterinary palpation indicated no pregnancy. San Bernardino Animal Health Services County Veterinarian will help determine if Sahara was pregnant, according to Riegler.

"This is such a tragedy. We spent many hours training and handling the camel and grew so very attached to her," Riegler said, noting in an email that she and husband Gil were still in shock. "She was an inquisitive, smart girl."

Oasis Camel Dairy is located about 10 miles east of Ramona on state Route 78, just past Pine Hill Egg Ranch and Intermountain Fire-Rescue Department.

Original Story

A tow truck was called in at 8:10 a.m.

It is unknown at this time how many vehicles were involved in the collision and how it happened. It is also unknown if there were any injuries to those involved.

Hey Ronmelancon, GO AWAY! I haul livestock all the time. I probably put on over 25,000 miles last year hauling peoples horses, donkeys and wild mustangs and I am connected with haulers throughout the west. I have never heard of such accusations that you're spouting off. So just go away. If you have such a compassion for the trailer hitch industry, take it to someone who will listen to you. Write to your Congressperson. But with your ability to gain peoples interest and respect (as shown in your rants in this discussion), I doubt you'll get very far. But please, for the sake of those who have lost a dear companion, JUST GO AWAY!.
ronmelancon February 03, 2013 at 04:24 PM
Never in my mind did I ever think trying to save luves would be so difficult ! People give more respect to global warming than the facts People who tow are using defective hitches, defective safety chains and may be building homemade trailers. For some reason people are attacking us for pointing out the facts Yes the person who towed this trsilet overloaded it did not have Federal mandated breaks most people by pads fed law by registering as Priviate so we will continue to record the next horse death the next human death when the next trailer come loose. Despite the efforts of the people who want me to go away one day you will have to a sneer to the higher power. He has given this to me to address. I Pray for each and every one of you who are so blinded by defective trailers
ronmelancon February 03, 2013 at 04:51 PM
You want the truth you can't handle the truth! The owner of the trailer did not conduct these steps and that is why the Camel died http://www.melodika.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=582527&Itemid=54

Some of your comments make very good sense but you obviously didn't read the article correctly. The safety chain was attached and it also failed. Please read correctly before you begin to comment
Gail Serfass February 04, 2013 at 02:57 AM
You really need to keep your mouth shut. You are very insenstive, uncaring and just a plain twit to be honest
Gail Serfass February 04, 2013 at 02:59 AM
And exactly what truth do you have? Were you there ...are you a investigator that works for the CHP.....did you personally check the hitch and the chain yourself at the accident.....NO.....so you need to zip your lip.
Gail Serfass February 04, 2013 at 03:01 AM
And I say again....how do you know this information....before you spout off, you better make sure you back up your statements. So ronmelacon....were you there?
Gail Serfass February 04, 2013 at 03:02 AM
And Sandra J....you are another one who needs to keep their mouth shut
Gail Serfass February 04, 2013 at 03:05 AM
Ronmelancon....you really need to zip your lip....you are very ignorant, insensitive and spell incorrectly sometimes
Gail Serfass February 04, 2013 at 03:07 AM
And I still would like you to prove how exactly do you know that the owners did something wrong. Saying it on a public forum and posting youtube links doesn't prove a damn thing. It only proves that you have way too much time on your hands
ConnieReally February 04, 2013 at 04:34 AM
Connie ~ You have got to be kidding me right???.. Great PR work and good use of getting the name in as much as you could... I use to write "unbiased" reviews for companies that paid me as well as other small businesses.. First rule in a PR or ad review writing is to mention the product or service as much as you can.. So you got that one down didn't you Connie? Anyone that has ever seen a paid testimonial or any other such write up can tell this is what this is... I am starting to question the sanity of this place as well as the affiliations with it.. Your review or reply is so poised, polished, and of course arrogant.. . How sad is that? I am starting to think the trainers are hiding something. Tell me Connie do you know the trainers well? How well? Did you ever notice any injuries on this camel or any others while in their care? How are the accommodation's? Do the accommodations meet codes, and safety specs? Just wondering since you seem to be a plethora of info on the what's a who's a call it camel place.. Your comment that you pity a trainer MORE for the loss of an animal that BELONGS to someone else is very transparent.. Sickening actually.. The nerve of anyone ever to say such a thing to someone that has just lost a beloved pet or family member.. It is like saying you pity a school teacher more if a child were to pass away over showing compassion for the parents.. Where is the logic in that?. How horrible!

It happened again. Another trailer for some reason came loose Several accidents reported on blustery morning by From staff reports Advertiser Emergency crews responded to several accidents on Thursday morning, including some fender benders and at least one wreck with injuries, a Kanawha County dispatcher said. A 911 report at 6:16 a.m. involved a trailer that became detached from a pickup truck on the Interstate 64 entrance ramp of Corridor G, the dispatcher said. One lane of the road was closed and emergency crews remained on the scene at 8:30 a.m. No injuries were reported. Don't you see the problem yet? Yet most of you are so clueless on why trailers come loose This is the fundamental problem with why people are moving out of Cslifornia. If this was an environmental problem then you would be all over it but when a loose trailer fails and every safety system fails don't blame the owner or the trailer company. Go after us an organization that is exposing the truth
ronmelancon February 04, 2013 at 05:42 AM
Guess what people this inventor are getting calls from Horse owners that for some reason don't want the same thing that happened to the Camel . So are you going to call these owners Nuts. They do not trust defective hitches and safety chains so go ahead and keep using defective and crappy hitches and smarter owners are getting this http://m.fox44.com/w/main/story/82269905/ When it happenstance to your trailer you wished you would have listened. Or when you get charged with Negligent Himicide when your defective trailer destroys a life you wished you listened. Some day the Today Show will expose all of you who made fun of our life saving mission

Even Nicholas Cages the actor gets his PA killed and we conted him that a Flying Canoe Trsiket in Hawaii killed him. Guess what people 9 states have NO SAFETY CHAIN LAW so in Hawaii you don't even have to use Defective safety chains, http://www.dangeroustrailers.org/site/mobile?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dangeroustrailers.org%2FWhy_Did_Michael_Davison_Die.html#2675 He died because of complete Ignorance including most people in this discussion

Oh look people a loose trailer killed a pregnant horse in Texas back in 2008. But for some reason people in this forum want pregnant animals to get destroyed like this http://dangeroustrailersaccidentsthatjust.blogspot.com/2008/04/loose-trailer-kills-pregnant-horse.html?m=1

Frankly your comments and rambling are getting very old and they really have no meaning or substance for this thread. You really need to learn compassion because you have none what so ever. Your main mission here seems to be just to spout stuff that has nothing to do with the story at hand anymore. Also the people of this discussion do not have complete ignorance. I am sure that they realize that there are many accidents out there like this one and the media cannot cover everything or the news would be on all day long which quite frankly would be very boring. The only person that has any ignorance in this discussion is YOU for your lack of compassion for the people who were driving the trailer and for the woman that is the owner of the camel. I am also quite ashamed of Patch for allowing you to continue this rant. The Right of Free Speech should be allowed in moderation.

couldn't resist googling mr melancon. "Road safety activist Ron Melancon was arraigned Monday in Henrico County General District Court on misdemeanor trespassing and destruction-of-property charges stemming from a July 30 incident at Glen Allen High School. On the night in question, some of the teens involved were in the Glen Allen High parking lot in three vehicles. In order to trap them there until police could be called, he said, he uprooted or detached two stop signs and two no-parking signs and put them on the parking lot's exit. He said the teens drove off anyway, skirting the blocked entrance to the lot." http://www.timesdispatch.com/news/henrico-activist-arraigned-on-misdemeanor-charges/article_de916e0a-6b59-5c9c-a7c2-37eefea5ff67.html

To ConnieReally, whoever you are, sorry that my heartfelt comments offended you, but I don't have to defend myself. This was not about you or me, but about those directly affected by this accident. Next time, consider what you are writing and where you are posting it. I have flagged your selfish comments as inappropriate. Connie Phillips

I feel bad for both parties involved, the camel's owner and the Oasis Camel Dairy. That trailer hitch should not have broken, but it did, and I believe no one is at fault except the company that made such a faulty trailer. That said, I still have complete faith in the Rieglers and support their efforts. It's important to remember that BOTH sides have been affected by this accident and are hurt.

Connie ~ It appears you gave me some great advice that may be more suited for YOU rather than me.. I am just someone who read this article and could see right through the transparent spin being put on this to show how much these people loved someone else's animal they were hired to train. You can call me Captain Justice pants if you like .. Or Senior Stating the obvious.. I am no one really but in a sense everyone with common sense.. I can email you or provide you with my name, address, phone number, DOB if that helps you with the reply, who ever I am.. You are pretty funny.. That made me laugh Oh I flagged all your post too because I could and well quite frankly I think it is super funny you flagged my post just because you do not like what I have to say. You know what they say about the truth.. I have one question for you. How is it that your reply is heart felt yet mine is "selfish"? I am not sure I could see where you got that. Explain to me what selfish is again. If selfish is me commenting on your reply with truthful observations, which hold you accountable for what you said in regards to a person I have never met before is selfish then,Ok I get it. However, seeing is I have never met anyone on these post or you I truly doubt selfish is the correct term.. Also how is anything I said inappropriate? To each their own..
ConnieReally! February 05, 2013 at 01:01 PM
Also ~~ Connie ~~ If my comment does get deleted I would think that would further prove my point.... However, The terms for flagging are not just because you do not agree with the person or hate what they have to say. If so I would flag RonM , and many others on here.. Instead I just flaged you because you truly made me laugh so I returned the favor.. I am not going to talk to you like a small child as you did me, and tell you to "consider what you are writing and where as you are posting it." Wow that sounded kind of like a threat.. However, nor will I project my feelings on you like you also did, so I hope you have a great day.. You made me laugh quite a bit today.. Thanks for that.. :o)
gail krussow February 05, 2013 at 08:44 PM
Katherine, I wholeheartedly agree with what you said. The Rieglers are the most responsible animal owners I know, the animals in their care whether they belong directly to them or are being boarded have always had their wellbeing put first and foremost at their facility. Thank the powers that be that Nancy and Gil were spared and that this trailer did not fail on a crowded double lane highway and go careening into a van full of toddlers. There has been a loss of property and I am sure that the Rieglers will take care of their portion responsibly
ronmelancon February 07, 2013 at 01:35 AM
While you make light of loose trailers a child almost was destroyed today by guess what a loose trailer http://www.cayman27.com.ky/2013/02/06/boy-hurt-in-accident So when you get to the higher place you Wil see all the lives lost along with horses and yes the Camel. By the way if parents did a better job we would not have teenagers who break into our cars destroy mailboxes and ring doorbells and the cops never found who they were. I did and they were bratty rich kids that had nothing else to do but terrorize my family.
ronmelancon February 07, 2013 at 01:39 AM
When the next life is lost by another preventable loose trailer you the people who make fun of saving lives wii know about it. Then ask yourself why people who own horses in Louisiana are getting a better hitch because they dont trust the current hitch and safety chains. See page 7 on the links http://www.dangeroustrailers.org/Saving_Lives_Why_So_Hard.html
