White Stuff Melting in the Local Mountains

People who went yesterday got the best of the sledding.

The sledding snow is melting and now mixed with mud in the Mt. Laguna area, according to the Mt. Laguna Volunteer Fire Department.

It's unlikely that chains are required on Sunrise Highway.

California Highway Patrol has reported that the highway was sanded by a crew at 12:13 p.m. Friday, because several cars were observed sliding in the southern part of the highway, in the El Cajon area.

At least one accident was observed on state Route 79 Thursday, in which a vehicle had been rear-ended. Conditions were icy in places. However, snowplows were out early Thursday morning plowing steets and were able to remove most of the precipitation before drivers went out on the roads.

Julian was jam packed with people in their jackets, hats, boots and gloves Thursday. Some stayed in town to visit over coffee, shop at the stores and sample the local food. Others braved state Route 79 to Sunrise Highway, where the "real snow" was to be found, according to the locals.

Many families found the white stuff all around Lake Cuyamaca was fun for sledding, without having to worry about using chains on a slippery road.

Roads around Julian and Mt. Laguna have patches of ice in the morning due to frosts and this week's precipitation. Drivers are advised to use caution because sometimes the ice isn't visible. The ice on the roads is melting in Julian by about 11 a.m. each day.

About 3 inches of snow still remains on Mt. Laguna.
