Crash on SR 67 Kills Four, Injures Three

Three-vehicle crash near Rock House Road blocks traffic for nearly three hours.

Editor's Note: Updated at 5:01p.m. Friday.

Authorities have released the ages of the people who died in Friday's multi-vehicle accident on Highway 67 in Ramona.

A 78-year-old man and 74-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene, along with two other men, ages 20 and 34. The two people in their 70s were traveling in the silver Camry. It has not been confirmed whether they were a married couple, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. Legal next of kin have not yet been notified. The hometown of the two elderly people has not been confirmed yet. The 20-year-old driver of the truck was from Poway. The 34-year-old passenger of the truck was from San Diego.

Original story:

Four people were killed and three injured Friday in a multi-vehicle collision on State Route 67 in Ramona near the Poway border, according to the California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire.

The accident occurred when a green Chevy pick-up truck heading northbound lost control and struck two cars—a blue Corolla and a silver Camry—in the southbound lane head-on, according to CHP officer Joe Nielsen.

Two male adults in the Chevy, and one male adult and one female adult in the Camry were declared dead at the scene. A female adult in the Chevy, and a female adult and a five-year-old girl in the Corolla were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries, according to CHP and Cal Fire. (The injury level was variously reported by officials and so it has been removed.)

The 20-year-old driver of the Chevy 1500 Silverado truck—a Poway resident—lost control for unknown reasons, according to Nielsen. Conditions were foggy and drizzly at the time and the accident occurred near a bend in the highway. CHP spokesman Brian Pennings reported Friday afternoon that witnesses and physical evidence showed the truck was traveling at high speed.

The other male in the truck who died was a 34-year-old San Diego resident, Pennings reported Friday afternoon. The female rear passenger sustained unknown internal injuries.

Nicole Pinning, 24, of Ramona and her 5-year-old female passenger were transported with injuries reported to be moderate at the time of the accident.

The accident occurred just south of Rock House Road in the unincorporated Rosemont area at about 10 a.m., according to the CHP.

The wreck forced the closure of the roadway between Poway and Archie Moore roads. Both lanes opened at about 1 p.m.

No names of the deceased have been released, pending verification by the Medical Examiner's staff.

I have been in a car accident and my 4 yr old daughter almost died because the guy was speeding around the corner and came into my lane, I was driving the way I was supposed to!

Update to story: Cal Fire has confirmed that the conditions of the three survivors of the accident changed from "moderate" to "critical" after the accident today.

What a sad story. I always feel very nervous driving down this road, especially when it's even just a tiny bit wet out. Just terrible for all of the families.

I have lived in Ramona almost my entire life and have lost to many friends on 67 and our other bad roads in Ramona. I have always told my kids who drive to say in the slow lane around Mt Woodson, and don't rush on 67! give your self plenty of time when you leave for work. How sad for all the families involved.

Any update on traffic going in and out of Ramona??
Becki May 25, 2012 at 10:29 PM
Road still closed east bound.
jovanivasquez May 25, 2012 at 10:39 PM
Weird I thought it ran north and south.... So nobody can enter Ramona? Only wildcat and or the 78?
Becki May 25, 2012 at 10:43 PM
Your right. North bound. Sorry

When are they going to put up a divide in is my question. It would save lives there is no point of being so heartless there are going to be alot of broken hearted families missing there loved ones today. If you drive the roads every single day or it's your first time to Ramona or just learning how to drive the roads are dangerous and on top it of with weather or speed just makes it worse. But it doesn't bring people back something has to change!

Hwy 67 essentially runs "north" until it hits the Mt. Woodson area & then it veers northeast into Ramona. So, it depends where an accident happens in terms of whether agencies might call it "north" or "east" or whatever.

I agree with Kelly Miller and Charlotte. Sympathies to the families and friends of the dead, prayers for the injured. A center divide would help avoid the head on collisions which are the deadliest kind.

They've got a divide down by Lakeside. I would be curious to know if the divide on this same highway in Lakeside cuts down or affects the number of accidents or the number of casualties. To have those two statistics regarding a similar stretch of road on the same highway might be interesting to see.

This road used to be so much worse when I first moved to Ramona in the 70's. I had many friends in High School who died when they went over the edge, no guard rails back then. It would be so much safer if people would respect that it is a dangerous road and lots of people die on it.

Its so dangerous on this road. I lived on it and was afraid to pull in and out of my driveway every day. I saw horrific accidents one in particular where a young Mother was killed a few years ago. People are not going to slow down, we need a Center DIVIDE or TRENCH PLATES that is the only way we will prevent this from happening again and again.

Between 1999 and 2010 there were 54 deaths on hwy 67.
Dee Dee May 26, 2012 at 01:23 AM
Vallery you are so right every one is trying to get ahead of the other guy when the lanes open up to two lanes. Then they speed up. Its treacherous and all people are thinking about is getting to their destination. They made us put our headlights on or fine us $200 and still look what happens? It was some stupid persons idea and it hasnt helped these poor souls!
Dee Dee May 26, 2012 at 01:25 AM

Gail Serfass May 26, 2012 at 06:16 AM
It is not the road. It is the people that drive on the road.
A.N.T May 26, 2012 at 03:53 PM
I SAY PROTEST!!!!!! MY HOUSE IS RIGHT ALONG 67 AND IT WOULD BE PERFECT SO EVERYONE CAN SEE. WE NEED TO GET OUR VOICES OUT THERE!
A.N.T May 26, 2012 at 04:00 PM
I don't want to be the next person or family dead on that road someone needs to be the voice for those who have lost their lives on that road!!!!
LG May 27, 2012 at 09:25 AM
A CONCRETE BARRIER like the one on Scripps Poway Pkwy with openings for emergency vehicles to get in is the only way to stop another car from crossing over the yellow and killing innocent people. I will be writing a letter to Dianne Jacods, Caltrans, and DPW making this request because Enough is Enough with so many children being left without a parent as a result of a head on collision on hwy 67.

I sorry but if you speak before knowing the facts you just show your ignorance. Like I see so many people here are doing. The most import parts here is the lives that have been lost everyone just wants to play the blame game. Maybe we should find out the facts and try and fixs the problems wether it be the road or driver or both.
