A 32-year-old bus mechanic from Ramona died after a collision involving an empty school bus and a sedan Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
An empty San Diego Unified School District school bus broke down on the right shoulder of southbound I-805 under El Cajon Boulevard, the CHP said.
CHP said the Ramona man was inside the engine compartment of the broken down bus when a 41-year-old woman driving a 2005 Nissan Altima lost control of her vehicle due to her speed on the rain-saturated road at 6:55 a.m.
Authorities said the Nissan struck the rear of the bus trapping the mechanic in the engine compartment and causing major injuries. The driver of the vehicle and the mechanic were both transported due to traumatic injuries.
CHP reported that the bus mechanic was later pronounced deceased at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego.
The victim's name has not been released.
