Carrol Harris Dies at 75; Farrier and Thoroughbred Horse Trainer

Having served in the Navy for 21 years, Harris was very active in the Ramona VFW Post 3783.

Carrol LaMar Harris, 75, of Ramona passed away on July 7. He was born in Caldwell, ID, on May 22, 1938, to Voyde and Erma (Gayhart) Harris. He had three brothers and one sister. Harris spent his youth in Pocatello, Idaho until moving to Salt Lake City where he attended high school.

He joined the Navy when he was 16 years old and served his country for 21 years. He served in Vietnam and retired as an aviation ordinance chief. 

On June 9, 1960, he married his sweetheart, Claudia Chamberlin. They met as children when their fathers worked together. After getting married, they moved to Whidbey Island, WA, for seven years.

Harris was transferred to California and served at North Island and then on to Miramar where he was stationed until his retirement. In 1975, during his tenure at Miramar, Carrol moved his family to Ramona. 

Harris is survived by his wife, Claudia, and their two children, Danny LaMar Harris (wife LeeAnn) and Julie Ann Thompson (husband Christopher). He is survived by nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a fourth due to arrive in late September. 

Harris loved horses, having worked as a farrier and thoroughbred horse trainer after his retirement from military service. He enjoyed shooting pool, was very active in the Ramona VFW, Post 3783, and was a member of the San Diego Bogwheelers Motorcycle Club where he competed in observed trials. 

A Service Recognition Ceremony, with military honors, followed by a Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at the Ramona Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783, 2247 Kelly Ave., Ramona.
