2012 Summer Band Camp

2012 Ramona middle and elementary school summer band camp will start on July 16. A concert by the summer camp students will be on July 27 in Ramona Oaks Community Park.

The Olive Peirce Middle School (OPMS) announces its 2012 Summer Band Camp, which starts from July 16th to 27th. Estimated over eighty students from Ramona in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh grades will participate in the seventh annual middle school and elementary school Summer Band Camp. All sessions of the Summer Band Camp will be held on the OPMS campus in room P101. Students meet Monday through Friday for 90 minutes of intensive instruction each day, and will improve their skills on wind instruments, such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, bassoon, and oboe. Students will also learn fundamentals on percussion and bass guitar.

There are three sessions open to eligible students.

  • Beginner Session: Starting at 8:30 am, it is for students with no instrumental background.
  • Intermediate Session: Starting at 10:45 am, it is for students with one year of elementary band.
  • Advanced Session: Starting at 1:00 pm, it is for students with more than one year of band experience.

According to Summer Band director Karl Lampe, one of the most unique and exciting parts of this summer program is the individual tutoring that is offered by local Ramona Unified School District volunteer students. Each student enrolled in the program will have twenty minutes of daily individual instruction from a trained tutor, who is knowledgeable on his/her particular instrument. Lampe stated, “During the regular school year, as many as 40 students can be in a band class with only one instructor, and each student only gets one half-hour of instruction per week.” The summer program really helps students to get off to a good start with an understanding of the fundamentals to become a highly successful band student. Lampe also stated, “The amount of instruction the students receive during the two week summer program is almost equal to the amount of instruction time the students get in a regular school year. Students joining the summer program have the advantage of individual tutoring.”

Lampe added, “This year, a fourth session of Jazz Band has been added and we are looking for a middle school student to accompany the Jazz Band on drum set.”

At the conclusion of the Summer Band Camp, the students will perform a concert to the public on July 27th, at 6:45 p.m., in the Ramona Oaks Community Park. The students will play the music they have worked on during the Summer Band Camp including solos, duets, trios and band arrangements.
