Allison Pina Attended San Diego Summer Music Institute

Allison Pina, a talented flute player from Olive Peirce Middle School (OPMS), is one of the few Middle School students who attended the San Diego Summer Music Institute (SDSMI), July 6-12, 2014. This Summer Music Institute, held at San Diego State College (SDSU), was taught by the faulty of SDSU and San Diego Symphony musicians. They taught middle and high school students to become leaders in music, and to interpret music notes, not just play the notes.

During the intense music week, Allison was very happy and bonded with new friends who are also music lovers. She learned from the first rate teachers in classes, sectional practices, and coaching for concerts. It became apparent to her that when a lot of people who are good at and enjoy what they do, the results are amazing. The final concert was a memorable experience for everyone’s personal accomplishment and the team effort. It was only too sad that friends had to part at the end. But what they learned will stay with them as part of the lifelong journey. Allison felt she became a better musician after the week.

When the school starts this fall, Allison will be in her 8th grade after playing flute for four years. She will continue being a member of the school honor band and the jazz band. She will also be in the Community Outreach Ensemble (CoRE), an honor of the 8th grade top players. Allison is a very shy girl, and loves reading, writing and art. Her music has gained her confidence in teamwork. The experience from last week is especially a boost for her to build friendship and to enhance music skills. She recommends this Summer Music Institute to everyone who loves music.
