Water Board Supports Ramona's Participation in County Fire Mitigation Fee

All present members at Tuesday's Ramona Water Board meeting supported the continuance of Ramona Municipal Water District's participation in the county's Fire Mitigation Fee program.

District General Manager David Barnum said the money is a developer's fee managed by the county. The ordinance was adopted in 1986 by the County Board of Supervisors and was created to collect and allocate funds to fire agencies in the unincorporated areas of San diego County.

"Last year, RMWD received $45,000," Barnum said. "We use the money for ambulances, equipment, etc."

Cal Fire Battalion Chief Saul Villagomez told the water board that 25 agencies in the county participate in the fee program and the fee hasn't been raised since 2007.

The fire mitigation fees per square foot for RMWD are as follows:

  • Construction Fire Fee: $.46
  • Agricultural: $.12
  • Agricultural-Sprinklered: $.02
  • Poultry/Greenhouse: $.01
The fire fees are collected to the county and distributed back to the fire agencies quarterly, according to RMWD.

The board voted unanimously to continue the district's participation in the fee program. Director Kit Kesinger was absent from the meeting.
