Ramona Library Collecting Prom Dresses for Princess Project

Have an old prom dress? Drop it off at the Ramona library for a deserving girl to wear at this year's big dance.

Got an old prom dress that's too beautiful to let sit and collect dust? Drop it off at the Ramona Library and let someone deserving feel beautiful in it!

The San Diego County Library is collecting gently-used formal gowns for teenage girls in need, County News Center said.

The library is taking formal gowns less than five-years-old and in good condition. All sizes and styles are needed. You can take them to any county library, including Ramona's, between now and April 20.

A library employee said if any Ramona residents wanted to drop off a dress in town, they'd find a way to ship the donations to one of the libraries (Vista and El Cajon) that will be giving away the prom attire on April 20.

Last year, more than 200 teenage girls attended the giveaway events, the county said.

“Many teenagers dream of going to high school formals but struggle to afford it,” said Library Director José Aponte. “The library is happy to help make those dreams come true and create lifelong memories for teens and their families.

The library’s annual Prom Dress Drive and Gown Giveaways are sponsored by the Princess Project. The non-profit organization acts as a fairy godmother to high school girls in need of dresses to wear to the big dance. They’ll match gowns with girls in grades 9-12.

Teenagers who are interested can sign up for the Gown Giveaway by calling the El Cajon library branch at 619-588-3718, the Vista branch at 760-643-5100 or by visiting the princessproject.org.

The giveaway itself runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 20 at the Vista (700 Eucalyptus Ave.) and El Cajon (201 E Douglas Ave.) libraries.
