More Snow Possible for Area Mountains

Mount Laguna reportedly received 14 inches of snow already.

San Diego County mountains were expected to get more snow Saturday, possibly coating Interstate 8 with ice, the National Weather Service warned.

A large upper level low-pressure system off the Northern Baja Coast was expected to bring scattered snow showers to the mountains, including Cuyamaca
and Mount Laguna tonight, but snowfall should decrease Sunday, the weather
service reported.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for mountain areas, to remain in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday. It stated snow could drop on areas with altitudes as low as 4,000 feet overnight and areas above 5,000 feet could see accumulations of up to 6 inches of snow.

Interstate 8 has three summits just above 4,000 foot elevation line in East County, meaning snow could affect travel on the mountainous route. The NWS
said residents and travelers in higher elevations should be prepared for hazardous winter weather conditions and possible road closures, and were
advised to carry chains, extra food and clothing.

Drivers should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility, which could be less than a quarter-mile in the snow and fog, the weather service stated.

The same low-pressure system was expected to bring strong gusty wind to valleys and coastal mountains which could make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles, and down trees and power lines, the weather service reported.
